Dear TRUE Members,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break. We have quite the long haul to the end of the year! TRUE will be having a Day of Teacher Celebration in May, so make sure to come out and relax a little bit as we will sure need it by then! More information to come!

Violent Students
Many teachers ask, “What are my rights with a violent student?” You have the right to suspend a student from your classroom for up to 2 days (and you can do this as often as needed). The Site Administrator cannot just place this student in another teacher’s classroom for the day, as per Ed. Code. This is your basic right. Besides this, other forms of support should be happening to support you and this student. If you are not feeling supported at your site by your administrator, please reach out to TRUE Leadership. You have a right to feel safe in your classroom and work site.

On the TRUE website (, under the page “Know Your Rights” , you can find the Ed Code language for suspension and expulsion of students.

Beginning of School – 2016-2017
Do you know when you are required to be at school next year as a teacher? It is NOT Aug. 3rd or 4th. Our start date is AUG. 5th. I am now getting emails from Principals asking me what our start date is. I have communicated this a few times through email and on TRUE’s FB Page. Please share this at your site: August 5th is the Start Date-Next Year. Aug. 3rd and 4th are Summer PD Days at your school site (paid at $250) and you can choose to go or not to that PD.

CTA State Council Representative Election
The deadline to get in your Declaration of Candidacy form is Thursday, April 7th by 4:30 p.m. at the TRUE Office. This form and other information regarding this can be found at

Largest Strike in US History!
After 2 years of fruitless contract negotiations, the California Faculty Association (CFA) will be on strike across the state of California on April 13-15 and the 18 & 19. This will be the largest public university system strike in US history. On April 13th, NEXT WEDNESDAY, we are asking you to support your fellow union members and educators by attending a rally at Sacramento State University, beginning at 4:30 p.m. A separate email will come out shortly with more details. If you cannot attend, please wear RED on April 13th to show solidarity.

CTA’s IFT (Institute For Teaching) Grant Writing Training Coming!
TRUE will hold a grant writing training on Tuesday, April 26th at the TRUE Office from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (dinner provided) for TRUE Members. Teachers can apply for up to $5,000 individual (Educator) grants or up to $20,000 (Impact) school site or district grants. A flier will be coming soon with more details.

Do you remember Prop. 30?
Through Prop 30, a tax increase was approved in 2012 to fund education and health care programs. Twin Rivers Unified School District received from this tax initiative: $67,030,233. If Prop 30 would not have passed in 2012, we would not have class sizes going down, stipend increases, salary raises, upgraded HVAC, facility improvement, more technology for our students and more. Although we can also work to see more of these funds do more in our district, we have a good start.

blobThis funding is set to expire! Please sign the initiative petitions that are out at sites for the Children’s Education and Health Care Act of 2016, to extend this support for our schools. This will extend portions of 2012’s Prop 30 (which only affects the top 2% of earners in the state) that have been so helpful to our schools. See your Site Representative for a petition to sign.
