I hope your first days of school have gone well! Here are some updates for you.
TRUSD School Board Meeting – 8-16-16
Unfortunately, at last night’s meeting a Board member and two parents personally attacked me for my speech at the Aug. 3rd Board meeting. It was disappointing, and quite a few people who attended last night, from administrators, community members and other Board members, came and spoke to me after the meeting regarding their disappointment in this trustee’s behavior and using Board comment time for a personal attack. The Board member was angry regarding my comments on the types of student behaviors TR teachers encounter teaching in our school district. Many of you have already expressed an interest in responding. The Organizing Team is working on this with me regarding what is the best way to respond. I feel the Board needs to hear your stories about teaching students who have struggles, and I want to do this professionally, unlike this Board member’s behavior. 5 out of the 7 Board members understood my comments and are aware of the struggles we have with some of our students. Look forward to another communication on this.
TRUE has received reports about late buses. All of these have been passed on to Tim Shannon in Transportation. It is my understanding that it is improving since the first few days, but if you continue to have problems, please email firstname.lastname@example.org letting us know about it.
TRUE Site Representatives
Your site should be conducting or has conducted a Site Representative Election. Principals/Administrators are not to appoint or just a place a teacher in the Site Rep position. If this is the case at your site, please contact the TRUE Office as this is not allowed. The certificated staff members must elect their union representative.
Our first TRUE Site Representative Meeting is on August 30th. If you haven’t done so already, please email email@example.com the results of your Site Representative Election, so we know who to send the meeting agenda to, as well as other important information for your site.
The TRUE team goes back to the table September 22nd. More communication will be coming from the Negotiation’s Team in response to the letter the district mailed out to you about their proposal. The Crisis Organizing Team will also be communicating with you soon on next steps to support negotiations of your Contract.
With many schools having their start and end time changed, please calculate your time and make sure that if you are teaching TK-6th, your instructional minutes are 332, and for 7th-8th grades are 367. High School start and end times did not change, so your day should be exactly the same as last year. Instructional minutes is time with kids: 20 minute report time, recesses and lunches do not count toward those minutes. Williams Act Violations (from Catherine Roller – TRUE Director for Special Education)
Have you received copies of the Williams Act Posters to be put up in your classroom?
There are 4: one white (English), one pink (Spanish), one green (Hmong) and one yellow (Russian).
Each year our district makes a concentrated effort to insure that this information is posted to comply with the Williams Act Settlement of 2004. This was a class action lawsuit filed against the State of California.
Education Code section 35186 creates a procedure for the filing of complaints concerning deficiencies related to instructional materials, conditions of facilities that are not maintained in a clean or safe manner or in good repair, teacher vacancy or misassignment, or the lack of opportunity to receive intensive instruction and services to pupils who did not pass one or both parts of the high school exit examination by the end of grade 12. The complaint and response are public documents as provided by law.
It is extremely important that teachers understand that this is a tool that helps to resolve concerns that we have, to insure that our students needs are being met. Please take a moment to review the attachments which are the Williams Act Poster (English version) and the complaint form. If you have a concern, such as no air conditioning or no textbooks, etc. please ask your students or their parents to complete the form, then scan the forms and email to your site administrator AND to the TRUE office at email@example.com. This will allow TRUE to follow up on complaints that have been filed. Educators may fill out these forms also but it can be more effective if completed by parents or students.
We are here to support TRUE members who are working to insure that students’ needs are being met. THIS MISSION IS POSSIBLE because WE, the teachers, care about students.
