Dear TRUE Members,

What a busy time of year! I hope you are all surviving and will make it to December 21st!

Mediation is tomorrow, Friday Dec. 9th for Negotiations:
The TRUE Organizing Committee is asking you to wear your TRUE black t-shirt (or any other black clothing) tomorrow, Friday, to show support for your Contract negotiations! The TRUE Office still has available black t-shirts in all sizes if you still need one.

The TRUE Negotiations Team held a webinar yesterday evening to share with TRUE members the process of mediation/impasse/fact finding and what the last offers from TRUE and the district are, in detail. We are working on passing along a recording of this webinar to all members, if possible. Stay tuned.

MOU-Early Release & Minimum Day:
TRUE and the district have been working on addressing the issue of conflicting contract language regarding the last day before Winter break. Contractually this is to be a minimum day but it is also an Early Release Wednesday. Just this past Tuesday the TRUE Site Representative Council voted on and passed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the District to designate December 21st as an Early Release Day, and to move the minimum day to February 16th (the Thursday before our President’s holiday weekend). The district wants members to know that to start your holiday early, staff may leave after their students have been dismissed on December 21st.

Teacher/Student Safety:
TRUE continually gets reports of teachers calling the office, secretary, nurse or anyone they can think of to help them when there is a violent situation in their classroom; be it their own student, another student or parent/family member of a student, and no one answers the phone. If this type of situation happens to you, please call 911 or the TR Police. If you call 911 from a district phone, TRPD will be the one to receive that call. TRUE Leadership has brought this concern up to district leadership; they responded that they would look into this with CSEA and Principals to find out what is happening. In the meantime, call 911 to protect yourself and your students.

Intervention vs. Suspension for drug/alcohol offenses:
It was reported to TRUE that students who had been caught with alcohol or drugs were being sent directly back to class without suspension. After addressing this concern with district leadership, they reported back to TRUE that: school site administration has the discretion to assign the Teen Intervene intervention program to students who commit such offenses. Students and parents may also ask to participate in this program, but ultimately it would be at the discretion of the administrator to recommend or assign the intervention.

TRUE’s Holiday TOY DRIVE:
Remember to bring to the TRUE office your donations of toys, books, games, coloring and drawing materials, etc. for the Sacramento Receiving Home, which serves many of our students. We are collecting those donations up until December 20th. The TRUE office is open Monday – Friday, 9 am to 7 pm. This is a great opportunity to give to the community we serve every day!

TRUE Scholarships for the CTA Good Teaching Conference:
Another reminder: TRUE will be giving out several scholarships for members to attend the CTA Good Teaching Conference, Feb.3 – 5, in San Jose. Please see below information on how to participate and due date.

I hope you all have a safe and restful Winter Break! We all deserve it for sure!

Sincerely,

Kristin Finney

Subject: TRUE Scholarships for CTA Good Teaching Conference in San Jose
To:

TRUE Members:

The 2017 CTA Good Teaching Conference will be held on February 3 – 5, 2017, in San Jose, at the Fairmont Hotel . This is a great conference that’s always raved about by teachers who have attended it. I have attended it myself and I am never disappointed! The sessions are presented by classroom teachers and experts in the field of education. In the attached document you can find description of the workshops that will be offered at this conference.

TRUE will raffle several scholarships for TRUE members to attend the Good Teaching Conference. Each scholarship will cover the $185 conference fee, which includes all meals except on Saturday evening (when you are on your own), and TRUE will also pay for your hotel stay (plus valet parking there), for the conference duration. Registration for the conference, at the hotel, will begin at 4:00 pm on Friday, February 3rd, so TRUE will pay for half a day release time, so you can leave school earlier that day. The conference will conclude at noon on Sunday, February 5th.

To apply for one of these scholarships, please respond to this email by Monday, Dec. 12th at the latest, saying you are interested (don’t forget to give us your full name). Please include the following questions with your answers:

What CTA conferences have you attended before?
Scholarship winners are required to write an article for our newsletter, the TRUE News, to share information on one of the workshops attended. Do you commit to writing that article?
Name of the school(s) where you work and your assignment?

We encourage all TRUE Members to apply for these scholarships, but preference will be given to first-time attendees to this conference. Scholarship winners will be announced via e-mail on Tuesday, December 13th.

Sincerely,

Kristin Finney
