SWUN math continues to be a challenge for many of our principals and teachers. Below is the Q & A that was emailed to principals and shared with their staff.
Swun Math Instruction Support
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is required of teachers?
Teachers are asked to utilize to the Swun lesson design, the instructional pacing recommended by Swun, and administer and score the benchmark exams provided by Swun and the district.
Teachers are asked to accept the support provided by the Swun coaches and engage in the site provided coaching. Teachers are asked to request additional support from their administrator when they are struggling in adhering to any of the above items.
- When will I be asked to begin implementing the Lesson Design and pacing?
As soon as a teacher receives the initial training from Swun, they should begin to attempt the Lesson Design. The pacing for the year and materials will be available to all teachers prior to be able to provide professional development for all teachers. However, teachers are free to implement prior to receiving training.
- Will teachers be evaluated based on their implementation of the Swun lessondesign and pacing?
No. Teachers are evaluated based on the California Standards for the Teaching Profession. Principals will observe math lessons and celebrate teacher implementation and offer additional support throughout the year as needed. This is to support teachers as well as create a safe environment to embrace new instructional approaches as a school team. Principals will be learning the new lesson design over the course of the year alongside teachers.
If it feels punitive or unsupportive to a teacher, notify the site administrator of the effect.
- When will the pacing guides for 1st through 8th grade be available and published on the Twin Rivers website?
The Swun team has worked diligently to execute the pacing guides for the Go Math curriculum for TRUSD. These are expected to be posted by the 18th of August. Drafts of these pacing guides that were distributed at the Swun PD sessions will be attached to this document until the final copies are posted.
- Does using BTBF negate the usage of Number Talks or is it a choice?
Number Talks can be utilized to help students learn their facts. The time spent on learning basic facts should be the same if not more with Number Talks. Assessing students mastery of the facts is essential to promote mathematical fluency, even those teachers using number talks.
- Are we requiring teachers to do 20-30 minutes of Beyond the Basic Facts?
We are asking teachers to spend 20-30 minutes of foundational math skills as needed. Teachers should be assessing the knowledge of students consistently.
- Can we utilize the Go Math chapter tests?
We do understand that teachers will need to use discretion based on what their students need. This is always the case. We have supported this with the availability of the Swun chapter tests as well. This provides more options of materials for teachers.
- Where/how can they access the Swun unit tests?
Teachers can download the chapter tests through the Swun website currently while we work to get these tests into Illuminate.
- Are unit tests required?
Unit test are optional but may provide valuable information to teachers in regards to where their students are before the benchmark is administered.
- Are student journals going to be provided for every school?
Yes, anticipated site delivery date in 8/14.
- Will homework journals be provided for each site?
No. Each site may elect to purchase homework journals with their site funds.
- Are we providing red pens/green pens?
No, but sites may purchase.
- What Teacher Editions do teachers get?
Teachers will receive all TEs for the grade levels they teach.
- Is TK using this supplement as well?
No. TK has Big Day.
- Why did the district rush this supplemental program? Why wasn’t it researched and piloted in our district first?
Swun is a supplemental program that does not need to be piloted. It has shown to get positive results. District results over the past three years necessitated a change.
- What will be printed and provided by the district?
Student journals are being provided. The need for printed assessments for lower primary grades is being assessed.
- Will we be using the assessments from Swun?
Teachers will be using the Benchmark Assessments and Performance Tasks from Swun except in Kindergarten. Performance tasks will be part of the benchmarks.
- Are there student log-ins?
- How does this fit in with Number Talks?
Number Talks could be used with Swun Math. Many trainers will recommend Number Talks.
- Can unit test be placed into Illuminate?
Yes, we are working with assessment and accountability department to place these in Illuminate. Unit tests, like chapter tests are optional.
- Are the benchmarks paper tests or computer based?
Required benchmark tests have been entered into Illuminate. The Performance Task portion of these benchmarks cannot be administered on the computer and will be printed for sites. It will require hand scoring by teachers prior to entering the student scores on illuminate.
- Will we use Beyond the Basic Facts?
Beyond the Basic Facts is an option to use to build fact fluency. If you are not utilizing Math Talks to build math fact fluency, then BTBF is required.
- How will the effectiveness of this be measured?
As always, data will be used to measure effectiveness.
- Are the materials teachers use up to individual teachers to pick and choose (GO Math or Swun)?
Yes. Use knowledge of your students to make instructional decisions.
- Is the unit 1 pretest going to be printed by the district?
- If Go Math is our core curriculum, why are we using different pacing?
Go Math, is your core curriculum, Swun is supplemental. Pacing is instructional. Swunis an instructional support for teachers. Use the Swun pacing as recommended but make decisions about what lessons to use in that allotted time. Because a publisher provides 10 lessons does not indicate that instruction should automatically take 10 days. Teachers working and planning together should make these decisions and begin with grade level standards and the Swun pacing guide. As a district, we recommend you utilize the Swun support coaches or your TOSA to help you with these decisions on every visit.
- Will SPED teachers use the SPED materials or grade level materials?
SPED teachers should use materials appropriate to the IEP goals of the student while continually giving access to grade level material.
- Will RSP teachers get hard copies of the teacher’s manuals for ALL the grade levels?
No, they will have digital access to every grade level they teach.
- Is there a generic login password for parents and students to access online (such as homework)?
IT will be placing a link on each school’s website that allows parents to access the materials.
- Is there a way to modify the assessments either the on-line version or paper?
Benchmark assessments will not be modified, however unit assessments may be used at the discretion of the teacher.
- When will everyone get the login information for Swun Math?
All teachers should have received their logins via email. If they did not, they can contact info@Swunmath.com.
- When will teachers know when a Swun coach will visit their site?
Schedules have been drafted for every site. Once district substitute assignments have been finalized, Swun coaching schedules will be published on the C& I web page and provided to principals.
- Will a Swun math coach come to my site and demonstrate a lesson with my students?
A part of the coaching and support from Swun includes demonstration. Talk directly with your coach during the visit and request this. The coaches are there to support your needs.
- When will benchmarks be made available?
The benchmark window will be published as in previous years.
- When will I get time to integrate Go Math and Swun? When is it appropriate to use Swun and when to use Go Math?
The pacing guide provides a correlation between Swun supplemental lessons and Go Math lessons by standard. Teachers should plan according to the standards map and pacing and select the best lesson that is appropriate for your students. Do not plan by chapters that a publisher created.
A portion of the Swun coaching days can be spent practicing this skill. PLC’s may also utilize Wednesday PLC time to discuss and practice this integration of curriculum.
As additional information and questions arise, additions will be made to this document.
If there are questions/concerns please e-mail the TRUE Office.
On July 27, 2017 we submitted to the District a Demand to Bargain for SWUN and for AB119. The District responded on August 2, 2017 and we are scheduled to meet with them on August 17, 2017. We will keep Members appraised of the outcome.
TRUE TUESDAYS – To continue clearly communicating to TRUSD that we are STRONGER, and STRONGER TOGETHER. We would like members to continue to wear their TRUE shirts on Tuesday. We are asking members to work per the Contract EVERYDAY!
DO NOT WORK FOR FREE!
Thank you to those sites who have held elections for TRUE Site Representatives AND emailed their results to the TRUE Office. If you have not held an election, please do so ASAP and ensure that the procedures outlined in our TRUE By-laws are followed.
PLEASE BE AWARE that some sites are seeing “SITE REP” listed on the sign-up sheet for Adjunct Duty. It is great if your principal will allow hours toward the Adjunct Duty that is required per contract, HOWEVER, the principal CANNOT decide who the Site Rep will be; Site Reps are elected by TRUE members by open nominations and secret ballot. Results are to be reported to the TRUE office immediately and the ballots forwarded in a sealed envelope with your site name on the front. It is imperative that the election be executed by a TRUE member whose name is NOT on the ballot. The term of office is 1 year. Each representative unit/school site shall be entitled to one (1) Site Representative for every twenty (20) active TRUE members or major fraction thereof ( which is 11 or more). Additionally, there should be at least one alternate per represented unit/school. Our first Rep Council Meeting is Tuesday, August 29, 2017 beginning at 4:00 PM @ CTA Office, 4100 Truxel Rd., in Natomas.
PLEASE NOTE that the TRUE Site Representatives DO NOT have the authority to negotiate alternative working conditions for the Certificated Staff at their site. If this happens, all parties involved would be in violation of EERA Government Code 3543.2(2):
“A public school employer shall give reasonable written notice to the exclusive representative of the public school employer’s intent to make any change to matters within the scope of representation of the employees represented by the exclusive representative for the purposes of providing the exclusive representative a reasonable amount of time to negotiate with the public school employer regarding the proposed changes.”
