What is a Catastrophic Leave Bank? The Program allows TRUE Members to donate one sick day per year, participation is entirely voluntary. The days collected go into a “bank”, and may be used for participants who have a Catastrophic Illness or Injury. The Catastrophic Leave Bank is designed to assist eligible TRUE Members who have exhausted all paid accruals due to a serious or catastrophic illness, injury, or condition of the employee or family member. What is Catastrophic Illness or injury? The Definition of “Catastrophic illness” or “injury” is defined as an illness or injury that is expected to incapacitate the Member, dependent child, immediate family member living in the household, spouse or domestic partner of the Member, or any relative in which the Member has legal power of attorney or a designation as a medical proxy for an extended period of time, and creates a financial hardship for the Member because they have exhausted all of their accrued sick leave.
How can I get request days from the bank? You MUST be a part of the bank for a minimum of one year before you are eligible to withdrawal, and have exhausted all your eligible leave. This means, if you have disability insurance, you must use your disability insurance. The first ten (10) duty days of catastrophic illness or disability must be covered by the Participant’s own sick leave, differential leave, or leave without pay. Leave from the Bank may not be used for an illness or disability which qualifies the Participant for Worker’s Compensation benefits, unless the Participant has exhausted all accrued leaves and Worker’s Compensation benefits have terminated. While employed at TRUSD the maximum number of days granted to an employee shall be sixty (60) days. Applications shall be reviewed and decisions of the Committee reported to the applicant, in writing, within ten (10) workdays of receipt of the application.
